Times Union

Lawyers for Donald Trump and others charged with trying to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election have urged a judge to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the prosecution over a romantic relationship that has embroiled the case in controversy. After several days of extraordinary testimony, the judge on Friday began hearing arguments over whether Willis’ relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade created a conflict of interest that should force both of them off one of four criminal... Haley says she raised a strong $12M in February, but can't point to long-term plan to beat Trump

Times Union

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she raised $12 million in February. That's a haul that will likely allow her to remain in the Republican primary against former President Donald Trump past next week’s Super Tuesday — even though she can’t point to an upcoming state where she expects to beat him. The former ambassador to the United Nations noted that she outraised Trump in January and insisted that the donations have continued to flow despite lacking a long-term plan to challenge... Prosecutors argued that Monahan was motivated by irrational rage toward trespassers. Читать дальше...

Alabama IVF ruling highlights importance of state supreme court races in this year's US elections

Times Union

The recent ruling in Alabama that frozen embryos are legally considered children has created a political firestorm after the decision halted treatment for many couples trying to have families through fertility treatments. It's also turned the spotlight on the importance of state supreme courts, which are poised to play a central in this year’s elections. Decisions by state high courts have become especially critical in the nearly two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a constitutional right to abortion. Читать дальше...

It says the cash-strapped U.N. agency has agreed to allow EU-appointed experts to audit the way it screens staff to identify extremists. The UNRWA agency is reeling from allegations that 12 of its 13,000 Gaza staffers participated in the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. More than a dozen countries have suspended funding. European inflation eases to 2.6% as energy prices fall and food inflation slows

Times Union

Inflation just keeps dropping in Europe. The consumer price index fell to 2.6 in February from 2.8% the month before. Falling oil and gas prices played a role, and food inflation isn't as bad as it was. Inflation is now far below its peak of 10.6% in October 2022, which it hit after Russia cut off most supplies of natural gas and sent energy prices through the roof. But the return of inflation to 2%, the goal set by the European Central Bank, is taking time. Food inflation eased to 4% from 5.6%,... Читать дальше...

Zyn nicotine pouches are all over TikTok, sparking debate among politicians and health experts

Times Union

A small nicotine pouch called Zyn has sparked a big debate among politicians, pundits and experts. The dispute reflects an increasingly complex marketplace in which companies like Philip Morris are promoting alternative products that may be less harmful than cigarettes and chewing tobacco. But health advocates fear Zyn, like electronic cigarettes, may catch on with teenagers due to its addictive nicotine. A recent warning about Zyn by a top Democratic senator prompted a swift backlash from Republicans and conservative pundits. Читать дальше...

They are TV's ghosts — networks that somehow survive with little reason to watch them anymore

Times Union

Cable television is filled with ghosts. They're networks that somehow survive as shadows of themselves, with schedules clogged with reruns and devoid of any real innovation. Fueled by the onset of streaming, this has come on quickly: once-thriving networks like USA, MTV, Disney and BET have lost more than half of their viewers in only a decade. As they fade, so are the communities they helped to create. Streaming has revolutionized how people watch TV, and industry leaders have raced toward what they regard as the future. Читать дальше...

The central African nation of Congo is known for its mineral riches. Now the country is looking to expand the oil drilling that so far has taken place only in its far west and off its Atlantic coastline. Its government is auctioning off 30 oil and gas blocks around the country. But some communities, rights groups and environmental watchdogs are warning that an expansion will harm the landscape and human health. The Associated Press visited a pair of villages near drilling sites operated by the French-British firm Perenco. Читать дальше...

A lawyer for Herridge, Patrick Philbin, declined to comment.
