New Jersey residents may soon get the chance to vote on whether they have the right to a clean environment. A measure advancing through the state Legislature would place a referendum on the November ballot on whether to amend the state Constitution to guarantee people the right to clean air, water and habitats. JPMorgan is facing nearly $350 million in fines from bank regulators due to issues with its trade surveillance program. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said Thursday that it was assessing a $250 million civil penalty against JPMorgan Chase Bank because it found that the company “operated with gaps in trading venue coverage and without adequate data controls required to maintain an effective trade surveillance program.”

SpaceX's mega rocket blasted off on another test flight from Texas but the spacecraft was lost at the end of the hourlong trip. The company said it lost contact with the spacecraft as it neared its goal, a splashdown in the Indian Ocean. After launching Thursday, the booster separated seamlessly from the spaceship and splashed down into the Gulf of Mexico and the spacecraft continued eastward. Britain’s high court has ruled that an Australian computer scientist is not, as he claimed, the mysterious creator of the bitcoin cryptocurrency. Craig Wright has for eight years claimed that he was the man behind “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the pseudonym that masked the identity of the creator of bitcoin. President Joe Biden is coming out in opposition to the planned sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel of Japan. Biden says in a statement obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its public release Thursday that the U.S. needs "strong American steel companies powered by American steel workers.” The announcement is coming as Biden is campaigning in the Midwest, and it could have ripples in his race against Republican Donald Trump. A landslide has destroyed a hillside home and is imperiling at least two others in Los Angeles. The slide occurred just before 3 a.m. in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood. The fire department says an initial search found no victims, but several people were evacuated from one house. There was no immediate word on the cause of the landslide, but many have been occurring in Southern California due to winter storms that have saturated the ground. Massive chunks of hail has pelted parts of Kansas and Missouri and brought traffic to a standstill along Interstate 70. Rescuers say falling rocks inside a gold mine in Australia killed one worker and left another with life-threatening injuries. Another 29 workers inside the mine when the collapse happened Wednesday took refuge in a safety pod and later returned to the surface.
