Voters backed abortion rights. Yet Kansas could make doctors ask patients why they want abortions

Times Union

Kansas is moving closer to requiring abortion providers to ask patients why they’re terminating their pregnancies and report the answers to the state. It would join at least seven other states with Republican legislatures that ban most abortions even though Kansas voters have affirmed abortion rights. The state House voted 81-39 on Thursday to approve a bill imposing the reporting requirements, sending it to the Senate. Kansas affirmed abortion rights decisively in an August 2022 statewide vote,... Читать дальше...

Times Union

The Miami Seaquarium, which was home to the beloved orca Lolita, is being evicted from it's waterfront location in Miami. Times Union

Fox will expand its coverage of college football with a package of Friday night games. A couple games could air on Fox in September with “SmackDown” moving to FS1... Читать дальше...

European regulators want to question Apple after it blocks Epic Games app store

Times Union

European Union regulators want to question Apple over accusations that it blocked video game company Epic Games from setting up its own app store. It's a possible violation of digital rules that took effect in the 27-nation bloc Thursday and a fresh escalation of the high-stakes battle between the two companies. Fortnite maker Epic has spent years fighting Apple’s exclusive control over the distribution of iPhone apps. Epic says Apple thwarted its attempt to set up its own iOS app marketplace to compete with Apple’s App Store. Читать дальше...

Federal Reserve's Powell: Regulatory proposal criticized by banks will be revised by end of year

Times Union

A sweeping bank regulatory proposal will be significantly revised by year’s end, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Thursday, a potential victory for the large banks that have aggressively opposed the likely changes. The proposed rule, issued last summer by the Fed and other regulatory agencies, is intended to implement changes that were negotiated internationally after the 2008 global financial crisis. Among other things, the rule would require the largest banks — those with more than $100 billion in assets ... Читать дальше...

Times Union

The top U.S. general for the Middle East tells Congress that exploding regional violence fueled by Iran presents the most likely threat to the U.S. homeland. He says the risk of an attack by violent extremists in Afghanistan on American and Western interests abroad is increasing. Army Gen. Panel says the next generation of online gambling will be more social, engaged and targeted

Times Union

The future of online gambling will be more social, more engaged with players and more targeted to their individual interests. That's according to panelists at an internet gambling forum Thursday in New York. They say the industry, which is still in its infancy after 10 years, already needs to change to remain relevant. That means getting bettors engaged with a gambling company’s brand, accommodating their fondness for social media and communal activity, and targeting experiences to their interests. Candy companies pitch gum as a stress reliever and concentration aid to revive stale US sales

Times Union

Gum makers are trying to figure out what will make Americans start chewing again. Generational habits, health concerns and the coronavirus pandemic have gnawed away at gum sales. Some manufacturers are leaving the U.S. market altogether. But Mars, which owns the 133-year-old Wrigley brand, is trying to reposition gum as a stress reliever and a concentration aid as well as a breath freshener. A company executive says the “aha moment” came from a nurse in a hospital COVID-19 ward who chewed gum behind a mask to calm herself. Читать дальше...

More Black women say abortion is their top issue in 2024 election, survey finds

Times Union

More than a quarter of female Black voters describe abortion as their top issue in this year’s presidential election. That's according to a survey out Thursday from health policy research firm KFF. The findings signal a significant shift from previous election years, when white, religious voters were more likely to name abortion as their top priority when casting a ballot. This will be the first presidential election since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June 2022 that women do not have a constitutional right to abortion. Читать дальше...

Millions of train, air passengers are affected in Germany as union members go on strike again

Times Union

Millions of travelers across Germany are being affected by strikes again after two unions called for two-day walkouts over wages and work conditions. Around 80% of all long-distance trains as well as regional and commuter trains in the country were canceled early Thursday as train drivers went on strike. The strikes led to traffic jams in cities and on highways, a shortage of share and rental cars... Читать дальше...

Times Union

The guest list for President Joe Biden's State of the Union address speaks volumes about what Democrats and Republicans want to focus on as the 2024 election season heats up. Biden and fellow Democrats have invited several health care providers and women whose lives have been impacted by stricter abortion laws following the Supreme Court ruling that stripped away constitutional protections for abortion. Republicans have invited guests who put a heavy focus on the nation’s broken immigration system... Читать дальше...

The Latest | China calls for Palestine to join UN as international criticism of Gaza war mounts

Times Union

China reiterated calls to admit Palestine to the U.N. on Thursday, and Norway warned companies against doing business in Israeli settlements, as international criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza mounted. After nearly five months of war, much of Gaza is in ruins. International pressure is growing for Israel and Hamas to reach a deal that would halt the fighting and release the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Many of the estimated 300,000 people still living in northern Gaza have been reduced to eating animal fodder to survive. Читать дальше...

To save water, drought-hit Morocco is closing its famous public baths three days a week

Times Union

Climate change and a yearslong drought have forced Morocco's famous public baths to close a few days a week in an effort to save water. The public baths called hammams for centuries have been urban oases where men and women regardless of social class commune and unwind. Some are asking why the government chose not to ration water at more upmarket hotels, pools, spas or in the North African nation's agricultural sector, which Morocco says consumes the majority of its water. One hammam user says the closures have raised questions about wealth... Читать дальше...

'Rust' armorer's trial gives Alec Baldwin's team a window into how his own trial could unfold

Times Union

The trial against an armorer in a fatal shooting on the set of the Western movie “Rust” has given Alec Baldwin's team a window into how his own trial could unfold. A New Mexico jury convicted Hannah Gutierrez-Reed on Wednesday of involuntary manslaughter in cinematographer Halyna Hutchins' death in October 2021. Alec Baldwin had pointed a gun at Hutchins, and it went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin factored prominently into 10 days days of testimony in Gutierrez-Reed's trial. Alabama governor signs legislation protecting IVF providers from legal liability into law

Times Union

Alabama has a new law protecting in vitro fertilization providers from legal liability. Gov. Kay Ivey signed legislation Wednesday that shields IVF providers from possible lawsuits and criminal prosecutions stemming from a court ruling that equated frozen embryos to children. Three major IVF providers paused services after the state Supreme Court ruled last month that three couples who had frozen embryos destroyed in an accident at a storage facility could pursue wrongful death lawsuits. The ruling... Читать дальше...

Europe's inflation is way down. But hope is gone for a quick interest rate cut

Times Union

Europe's outburst of inflation is receding. But a cut in interest rates from a record-high 4% is not going to happen at Thursday's European Central Bank meeting. And it may even have to wait until summer. ECB President Christine Lagarde is likely to stress Thursday that the bank wants to see more evidence that the inflation beast has been tamed before cutting rates. Inflation was down to 2.6% in February, but the consumer price index has been stuck between 2% and 3% for five months, raising concern... Читать дальше...

For social platforms, the outage was short. But people's stories vanished, and that's no small thing

Times Union

The widespread attention given to the blanking of Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger platforms on Tuesday tells a tale. It says that social media platforms, like the books or newspapers or insert-medium-here of other times in history, matter more than just entertaining pastimes. The technologies might be recent, but what we use them for? That taps into something age-old — that we’re wired to love stories. Telling them. Listening to them. Relating to each other and our communities through them. Читать дальше...

Britain's Conservative government announces tax cuts it hopes can lift its ailing election fortunes

Times Union

British Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt is seeking to bolster spirits within his Conservative Party with a series of tax cuts that he hopes can turn the political tide ahead of a general election this year. Though the British economy has hit one definition of recession and public finances will remain stretched over coming years, Hunt used his annual budget statement Wednesday to cut taxes. He announced a reduction in national insurance — a tax that 27 million employees pay — by a further 2 percentage points. Читать дальше...

Caucus chaos makes Utah last state to report Super Tuesday results

Times Union

A decision by the Utah Republican Party to select its presidential nominee through caucus meetings instead of a traditional primary left many voters confused and frustrated as the nation waited until just after midnight for the state to unveil its results. Utah’s Republican leaders are facing stiff blowback Wednesday after long lines and technology issues at some of the 2,300 neighborhood caucus locations has made Utah the last of the 15 Super Tuesday states to release voting numbers. Utah Republican... Читать дальше...
