Florida wildlife officials say a sperm whale that became famous after beaching itself on a sandbar has died. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement that the whale died around 3 a.m. Monday. Police and wildlife officials began trying to free the whale from the shallow sandbar off the beach in Venice on Sunday morning. They had estimated it to be about 70 feet long. Honolulu police say they are investigating what appears to be the murder-suicide of a family, including three children, at a Manoa home. Lt. Deena Thoemmes said during a news conference Sunday afternoon that a preliminary investigation shows the husband fatally stabbed his wife and three children. Police say witnesses reported there was an argument in the home early Sunday morning. Thoemmes says there was no history of domestic calls to the residence and police do not have a motive for the killings.

Authorities are trying to help a sperm whale that beached on a sandbar off Florida’s Gulf Coast, but conditions in the water are preventing crews from getting near it. The Venice Police Department said in a Facebook post Sunday that the whale was alive Sunday afternoon after it became stranded in waters about 75 miles south of Tampa.
