Driving along ... and the roadway vanishes beneath you. What's it like to survive a bridge collapse?

Times Union

What's it like to survive a bridge collapse? Survivors of past bridge failures in Minnesota and Texas tell The Associated Press that the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore brings back harrowing memories of their own ordeals. Linda Paul was on the Interstate 35 West bridge in Minneapolis when it collapsed in 2007. She fell 50 feet in her minivan and was injured by chunks of concrete. Gustavo Morales Jr. thought of his wife and children as the Queen Isabella Causeway collapsed in Port Isabel... Читать дальше...

Kansas considers limits on economic activity with China and other 'countries of concern'

Times Union

Republican legislators in Kansas have advanced proposals to limit the state's involvement with individuals and companies from China and other U.S. adversaries. Bills approved Wednesday by the Kansas House would prevent them from owning farmland or business property, limit state investments in their companies and restrict the use of foreign-made drones. The bills target what are called countries of concern. Besides China, the list includes Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Venezuela as well as any U.S.-designated terrorist group. Читать дальше...

Yellen is planning her second trip to China as Treasury secretary. Trader Joe's upped the price of its bananas for the first time in decades. Here's why

Times Union

It may not be too “appeeling,” but the price of some bananas are rising by a few cents. Trader Joe’s recently upped the price to 23 cents for a single banana, marking a 4-cent — or 21% — increase from the grocer’s previous going rate for the fruit that remained unchanged for over 20 years. In contrast to other foods more heavily impacted by inflation, bananas have stayed relatively affordable over time — with average global prices never exceeding more than about 80 cents per pound (0.45 kilograms). Its 2018 report says 18 of the collapses happened in the United States. Among the more notable collapses in the U.S. was that of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge spanning Florida's Tampa Bay. Times Union

Your home is your sanctuary, but it’s also one of your biggest budget items. And after you retire, it may feel like more house than you need. But in this housing market, when a smaller home with upgraded features may be about as expensive as the one you’re selling, is it still smart to downsize? China wins WTO dispute with Australia over steel products

Times Union

China has won a nearly three-year-long dispute with Australia at the World Trade Organization over tariffs on steel products that began during a low point of bilateral relations between the countries. Australia’s Trade Minister Don Farrell said in a statement Wednesday that Canberra accepted the WTO’s ruling and supported a rules-based trading system. Beijing took its complaint to the WTO in June 2021 over Australia’s extra duties on railway wheels, wind towers and stainless steel sinks imported from China. Читать дальше...

Hurry up and wait: Trump's classified documents case is mired in delays that may run past election

Times Union

The classified documents investigation of Donald Trump appeared to have clear momentum in 2022 when FBI agents who searched the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate recovered dozens of boxes containing sensitive documents. But each day brings mounting doubts that the case can reach trial this year. The judge hasn't set a firm trial date despite holding two hours-long hearings with lawyers this month. Motions to dismiss the case are still pending, and a contested defense request to disclose the names of government witnesses remains unresolved. Читать дальше...

Those Godzilla claw shoes on the Oscars red carpet are just one of Hazama's 'dark fantasy' creations

Times Union

One Japanese creation grabbing attention on the Oscars red carpet wasn’t a movie. It was the kitsch shoes that seemed to be clenched in Godzilla’s claw. They were the work of Ryosuke Matsui, who described his joy at seeing the “Godzilla Minus One” team win the visual effects Oscar while wearing his shoes. Matsui heads his own brand called Hazama, which means “the space-in-between” in Japanese. The business with just six employees offers fluffy skirts, sweaters in gradient colors, jackets with repetitive motifs... Читать дальше...

California Restaurant Association says Berkeley to halt ban on natural gas piping in new buildings

Times Union

The city of Berkeley, California, has agreed to halt enforcement of a ban on natural gas piping in new homes and buildings that was successfully opposed in court by the California Restaurant Association. The organization says a settlement follows the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ refusal to reconsider a 2023 ruling that the ban violates federal law. The office of the city attorney said Berkeley will continue to be a leader in climate action. In 2019, Berkeley became the first U.S. city to adopt... Читать дальше...

Pennsylvania train crash highlights shortcomings of automated railroad braking system

Times Union

The collision of three Norfolk Southern trains in Pennsylvania early this month highlights the shortcomings of the automated braking system that was created to prevent such crashes. That's because none of the circumstances the National Transportation Safety Board described Tuesday in its preliminary report on the March 2 derailment would have triggered the automated positive train control system to stop the trains. Railroad safety expert Chris Barkan said the system that was created after a deadly... Читать дальше...
