North fired his handgun seven times into the car’s door after Soulemane led police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 95. North testified that he believed Soulemane was going to attack other officers. But... Читать дальше...

US consumer sentiment ticks down slightly, but most expect inflation to ease further

Times Union

Consumers became slightly less optimistic about the economy this month, though they continue to expect inflation to cool further, a potential sign that price increases will keep slowing. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index slipped to 76.5 in March, barely below February’s figure of 76.9. Americans’ outlook has essentially remained fixed since January, when it leapt higher. Sentiment is about halfway between its all-time low, reached in June 2022 when inflation peaked, and its pre-pandemic averages. Читать дальше...

Biden and Trump will appear on primary ballots in four states: Arizona, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Читать дальше...

Democratic congressmen Chuy Garcia and Danny Davis have drawn strong challengers, as has Republican congressman Mike Bost. The seats are not expected to change hands in November. At the top of the ticket, presumptive presidential nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump are expected to easily pad their delegate leads. Neither the Democratic president nor the Republican ex-president faces... Читать дальше...

Some 14.6% of U.S. homes listed for sale last month had their price lowered, according to Realtor.com. That’s up from 13.2% a year earlier, the first annual increase since May. AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Ohio's presidential and state primaries

Times Union

The most high-profile election in Ohio’s primary on Tuesday will be the Republican contest to take on the state’s Democratic U.S. senator. Sen. Sherrod Brown was first elected in 2006 and is among the most vulnerable members of a closely divided chamber. Brown has held onto his seat even as the state has shifted to the right. There are three names on the ballot: state Sen. Matt Dolan, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and businessman Bernie Moreno. LaRose and Moreno have aligned themselves with the pro-Trump camp of the party... Читать дальше...

German greenhouse gas emissions dropped sharply last year, raising hopes of meeting 2030 target

Times Union

Official data shows Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped by one-tenth last year as renewable energy grew in importance, the use of coal and gas diminished and economic pressures weighed on businesses and consumers. The country's vice chancellor, who is also the economy and climate minister, said on Friday that Europe’s biggest economy is on course to meet its target for 2030 of cutting emissions by 65%, compared with 1990. Germany aims to cut its emissions to net zero by 2045 and is working... Читать дальше...

Stock market today: World markets are mostly lower after retreat on Wall Street

Times Union

Shares have retreated in Europe and Asia after a mixed batch of data on the U.S. economy dashed hopes that easier interest rates are coming soon. Oil prices also fell. On Thursday, the S&P 500 fell 0.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.4%. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Data showed that inflation remains worse than expected. That suggests that the Federal Reserve might not begin cutting interest rates this month. But traders still largely expect cuts to start in June, and other reports... Читать дальше...

Proposed US resolution would back global efforts for an immediate and sustained cease-fire in Gaza

Times Union

The United States has circulated the final draft of a United Nations Security Council resolution that would support international efforts to establish “an immediate and sustained cease-fire” in the Israel-Hamas war. It's part of a potential deal to release hostages taken captive during Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7. No time has been set for a vote, and the text could still be changed. The final draft does not include the tough language in the initial text saying Israel’s planned... Читать дальше...

Why are so many voters frustrated by the US economy? It's home prices

Times Union

Going into this election year, the United States is slogging through a housing affordability crisis. At the root of this problem: America failed to build enough homes for its growing population. The shortage is dampening President Joe Biden’s assurances that the U.S. economy is strong. And it underscores the degree to which Republican Donald Trump has largely overlooked the shortages. If it wasn’t for shelter costs, inflation would be running at a healthy and stable 1.8%. Instead, it’s hovering around... Читать дальше...

These Republicans won states that Trump lost in 2020. Their endorsements are lukewarm (or withheld)

Times Union

Former President Donald Trump dominated the Republican presidential primaries on his way to a third consecutive nomination. But that does not mean his command of the party is seamless. Many GOP leaders in battleground states are offering him only tepid support — or not endorsing him at all. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp says he will support the Republican ticket. But he tells reporters that his top priority is protecting GOP legislative majorities at the statehouse in Atlanta. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin... Читать дальше...

February retail sales up 0.6%, yet fissures emerge in what has been a driving force for US economy

Times Union

American shoppers picked up their spending a bit in February after pulling back the previous month. But last month’s gain was weaker than expected, and January’s decline was revised even lower, suggesting that consumers are becoming more cautious. Retail sales rose 0.6% last month after falling a revised 1.1% in January, dragged down in part by inclement weather, according to the Commerce Department’s report on Thursday. February’s number was also lifted in part by higher gas prices and higher auto sales. Читать дальше...
