Supreme Court opens new frontier for insurrection claims that could target state and local officials

Times Union

A pair of recent U.S. Supreme Court actions has opened the door to a new legal frontier in which local and state officials can be disqualified from office for life for engaging in “insurrection” or providing “aid and comfort” to enemies of the Constitution. The Supreme Court recently said states could not use the 14th Amendment to remove candidates for federal office. But in a separate case this week, it rejected an appeal from a former New Mexico county commissioner who was kicked out of office... Читать дальше...

As electric vehicle sales slow, US relaxes plans for stricter auto emissions standards for a while

Times Union

The Biden administration this week is expected to announce new automobile emissions standards that relax proposed limits for three years but eventually reach the same strict standards proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The changes come as sales of zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles, needed to meet the standards, have started to slow. The auto industry has cited lower sales growth in objecting to the EPA’s preferred standards unveiled last April as part of the most ambitious plan... Читать дальше...

A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court has asked for arguments related to a question over what legislative boundaries should be in place for a potential recall election organized by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission... Читать дальше...

Now, the question is how fast lawmakers can get the bills passed to avoid a partial government shutdown. The Democratic president said Tuesday he’ll sign the bill package as soon as he gets it, but time is running short. Legislative staffers need time to finalize the bill text. The House has a rule that lawmakers will get 72 hours to review the bill before voting on it. And the... Читать дальше...

Times Union

The U.N. labor agency says illegal profits from forced labor globally have risen to the “obscene” amount of $236 billion per year. The International Labor Organization says sexual exploitation is to blame for about three-fourths of the total take from a business that deprives migrants of money they can send home, swipes jobs from legal workers and lets criminals behind it dodge taxes. The tally for 2021, the most recent year covered in the painstaking global study, marked an increase of 37%, or $64 billion, compared with a decade earlier.

Times Union

There’s support for a trail system that could allow for travel across America from Washington state to Washington, D.C. without using a road, but rolling out the plan has included bumps along the way. One of the main issues is connecting existing trails to create a continuous 3,700-mile walking and biking route. That’s the idea behind the Great American Rail-Trail. The Biden administration is set to open applications Tuesday for a program that will prioritize constructing and connecting recreational trails all over the country. Читать дальше...
