'Ozempig' remains Minnesota baseball team's mascot despite uproar that name is form of fat-shaming

Times Union

For a Minnesota minor league baseball team known for a history of outlandish promotions, the idea of naming its longtime live pig mascot after the weight loss drug Ozempic made perfect sense. The St. Paul Saints quickly found out that not everyone was amused by the pig’s name, Ozempig. Almost immediately after the team announced the name this week ahead of Friday’s opening day game, criticism began pouring in on social media from people distressed by the name, saying it belittled people who are overweight. Could tugboats have helped avert the bridge collapse tragedy in Baltimore?

Times Union

Tugboats were not escorting the massive cargo ship Dali when it lost power in the Port of Baltimore and slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, toppling the span and killing six people. Maritime experts told The Associated Press that this week's disaster is drawing renewed attention to whether such tugboat escorts should be required in the nation's ports to nudge increasingly big ships to safety and protect bridges and other critical infrastructure. Cost-conscious shipping companies have over... Читать дальше...

Powell says Fed wants to see 'more good inflation readings' before it can cut rates

Times Union

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated a message he has sounded in recent weeks: While the Fed expects to cut interest rates this year, it won’t be ready to do so until it sees “more good inflation readings’’ and is more confident that annual price increases are falling toward its 2% target. Speaking at a conference at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Powell said he still expected “inflation to come down on a sometimes bumpy path to 2%.″ But the central bank’s policymakers, he said... An inflation gauge closely tracked by the Federal Reserve shows price pressures easing gradually

Times Union

A measure of inflation that is closely tracked by the Federal Reserve slipped last month in a sign that price pressures continue to ease. Prices rose 0.3% from January to February, decelerating from a 0.4% increase the previous month in a potentially encouraging trend for President Joe Biden’s re-election bid. Compared with 12 months earlier, though, prices rose 2.5% in February, up slightly from a 2.4% year-over-year gain in January. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, last month’s “core” prices suggested lower inflation pressures. Читать дальше...

Times Union

The Environmental Protection Agency has set strict emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks, buses and other large vehicles. EPA officials say Friday's action will help clean up some of the nation’s largest sources of planet-warming greenhouse gases. The EPA says the new rules will take effect for model years 2027 through 2032 and will avoid up to 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the next three decades. EPA Administrator Michael Regan says the new standards will especially benefit... Читать дальше...

Takeaways: AP investigation reveals Black people bear disproportionate impact of police force

Times Union

The Associated Press found that Black people make up a disproportionate number of those who died after being restrained, beaten or shocked with stun guns by police officers over a decade. Accounting for 12% of the U.S. population, non-Hispanic Black people made up a third of the more than 1,000 fatalities. The three-year investigation, led by AP with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism, buttresses studies by researchers who demonstrated that Black people endure discrimination... Times Union

The frantic 911 call described a 23-year-old man suffering a seizure, foaming and shaking. When medics and police arrived, the tiny apartment in Bristol, Tennessee, became a chaotic scene. Karen Goodwin watched in fear, but she trusted that the police and paramedics were there to help her son, Hunter. He stopped breathing in the ambulance, a life cut suddenly short. Republican panel's selection to be Rep. Buck's likely replacement is a saving grace for Boebert

Times Union

A Colorado Republican panel has made a surprising decision, choosing a former mayor, Greg Lopez, to be U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s likely replacement until the November general election, a saving grace for Rep. Lauren Boebert’s bid for another term in Congress. Lopez will run as the Republican candidate in the June special election following Buck’s abrupt departure from office earlier this month. Nine competitors had jostled for the special election nomination, including seven also running in the primary race against Boebert. Читать дальше...

Georgia’s House of Representatives voted Thursday to accept changes to House Bill 1105 by a vote of 99 to 75. Under the measure, local law enforcement agencies would risk losing state funding for failing to work with immigration officials. Local officials could also face misdemeanor charges. The measure was backed by Republicans and gained traction after police... Читать дальше...

What to know about Day of Visibility, designed to show the world 'trans joy'

Times Union

International Transgender Day of Visibility aims to show “trans joy.” Buildings will be lit pink, white and light blue to mark the event on Sunday, which features rallies and panels. The idea is to bring attention to a population that's often ignored, disparaged or victimized. The event stands in contrast to the Transgender Day of Remembrance held each November to honor the memory of those killed in anti-transgender violence. Transgender people have become more visible. But they also are facing more restrictions in some U.S. states... Читать дальше...

A growing number of Americans end up in Russian jails. The prospects for their release are unclear

Times Union

U.S. citizens jailed in Russia include a Wall Street Journal reporter, a vacationing corporate security executive and a dual national visiting her family in Tatarstan. Arrests of Americans in Russia have become increasingly common in recent years, as relations between Moscow and Washington sink to Cold War lows. The U.S. accuses the government of President Vladimir Putin of targeting Americans for political reasons and using them as bargaining chips, but Russian officials have insisted they all have violated the law. Many Americans say immigrants contribute to economy but there's worry over risks, AP-NORC poll finds

Times Union

Americans are more worried about legal immigrants committing crimes in the U.S. than they were a few years ago, a change driven largely by increased concern among Republicans. That's according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Democrats continue to see a broad range of benefits from immigration. Overall, about 4 in 10 Americans say that legal immigration to the U.S. is beneficial to the economy and culture, but that sentiment is down since 2017. Republicans... Читать дальше...
