State Medicaid offices target dead people’s homes to recoup their health care costs

Times Union

Many Americans rely on Medicaid when fighting diseases. But there's a catch. Often, states try to recoup the costs after the recipients die. That could mean a big bill — even the sale of their homes. The federal government requires every state to recover money from the assets of dead people who, in their final years, relied on Medicaid for long-term care. Now, critics want the federal government to stop doing that because, they say, the program collects a bit of money from the poorest people. States... Читать дальше...

Long recovery ahead for some in path of deadly tornados in central U.S.

Times Union

A day and a half after deadly tornadoes ripped through part of the central U.S., residents are cleaning up, assessing damage and helping their neighbors. It will be a long recovery for some. Thursday night’s storms claimed three lives in the Indian Lake area of Ohio’s Logan County, one of the hardest-hit regions, and about 40 people were injured and dozens of homes damaged in one Indiana community. Samantha Snipes says in Lakeview, Ohio, that her dad's garage was leveled and the back of his house is gone, but everyone is safe on his street. Читать дальше...

Police: Suspect is barricaded in New Jersey home after killing 3 people in Philadelphia suburb

A suspect has barricaded himself in a home in New Jersey after allegedly shooting three people to death in suburban Philadelphia. Falls Township Police said in a statement that the suspect, a 26-year-old homeless man, knew the shooting victims. The Saturday morning shooting in Falls Township in eastern Pennsylvania forced the cancellation of a St. Patrick’s Day parade and shut down a children’s theme park. Authorities in Bucks County issued a shelter-in-place order for the area for several hours, but it was canceled by early afternoon.

After the pandemic, young Chinese again want to study abroad, just not so much in the US

Times Union

After the pandemic, young Chinese are again looking to study abroad. But the decades-long run that has sent an estimated 3 million Chinese students to the U.S. could be trending down. The deterrent for some is the high cost of a U.S. education. For others, like Helen Dong, who chose to study in the U.K., safety is a concern. She said Chinese parents fear gun violence in the U.S. But growing tensions between the U.S. and China are contributing to the trend. The Chinese government has criticized the... Читать дальше...

Schumer's rebuke of Netanyahu exemplifies US leaders skirting an unwritten rule on allies' elections

Times Union

Republicans and Israeli officials were quick to express outrage after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer lashed out at Prime Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza and called for Israel to hold new elections. They accused the Democratic leader of breaking the unwritten rule against interfering in a close ally’s electoral politics. Schumer's stinging rebuke of Netanyahu was certainly provocative, but it was hardly norm-breaking. U.S. leaders, as well as allies, are more frequently butting... Читать дальше...

What to know about the Maine mass shooting commission report

Times Union

An independent commission has been reviewing the events leading up to Maine's deadliest mass shooting. Army reservist Robert Card killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston, Maine, on Oct. 25, 2023. The main takeaways from the report released Friday are that law enforcement should have seized Card's guns and taken him into protective custody weeks before the shooting. The Associated Press offers a deeper look at what the commission found, as well as some of the reactions.

America's largest St. Patrick's Day parades are being held Saturday. While the St. Patrick's Day holiday is March 17, it's celebrated early when it lands on a Sunday. Enormous crowds are expected in Savannah, Georgia. A humble St. Patrick’s parade held in 1824 has grown to become the South's largest. In New York City, 2 million people regularly turn out for the main parade in Manhattan. In Chicago, plumbers will once again turn the Chicago River green. They use a powder that organizers say is not harmful to the environment.

Abortion story from wife of Nevada Senate hopeful reveals complexity of issue for GOP candidates

Times Union

When the wife of Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown spoke about an abortion she had in Texas right before they met, some Republicans welcomed the disclosure. They said it represented a more compassionate approach to a complicated personal issue that’s been hurting GOP candidates. But Brown has yet to say how he reconciles the tension between his wife Amy’s story and the implications of his own policy proposals as a Nevada Senate hopeful. Brown opposes a federal abortion ban and says abortion policy should be left to the states. Читать дальше...

How Texas' plans to arrest migrants for illegal entry would work if allowed to take effect

Times Union

Texas’ plan to arrest migrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally is on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court considers a challenge to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest move over immigration. The nation’s highest court has put a pause on law through Monday at 5 p.m. Eastern over a lawsuit led by the Justice Department. The department argues that Texas is overstepping the federal government’s immigration by attempting to arrest migrants and empower state judges to order them to leave the U.S.... Читать дальше...

Bernie Sanders wants the US to adopt a 32-hour workweek. Could workers and companies benefit?

Times Union

The 40-hour workweek has been standard in the U.S. for more than eight decades. Now some members of Congress want to give hourly workers an extra day off. Sen. Bernie Sanders this week introduced a bill that would shorten to 32 hours the amount of time many people in the U.S. can work each week before they’re owed overtime. The far-left independent from Vermont says U.S. companies can afford to give employees more time off without cutting their pay and benefits given advances in automation, robotics and artificial intelligence. Judge Juan Manuel Merchan agreed Friday to at least a 30-day postponement. The trial had been slated for March 25.
