The Biden administration has announced new automobile emissions standards that officials call the most ambitious plan ever to cut planet-warming emissions from passenger vehicles.

The United Steelworkers Union has endorsed President Joe Biden, giving him support from another large labor union. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says it expects the federal government will be awash in debt over the next 30 years. But the office's outlook has improved over the past year due to increased immigration and agreements to reduce spending. The largest U.S. retail trade group is forecasting that the country's retail sales will increase anywhere between 2.5% and 3.5% this year. That's a solid but still slower pace from the 3.6% seen last year. The National Retail Federation said Wednesday that sales should reach between $5.23 trillion and $5.28 trillion this year. A Washington state man accused of helping kill thousands of birds is expected to plead guilty to shooting eagles on an American Indian reservation in Montana and selling their feathers and body parts on the black market. Travis John Branson of Cusick, Washington, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy, wildlife trafficking and two counts of trafficking in federally protected bald and golden eagles on Wednesday. The Mega Millions jackpot has reached $977 million for Friday night’s drawing after no tickets matched all six numbers drawn on Tuesday night. The winning numbers drawn on Tuesday were 24, 46, 49, 62, 66 and the gold Mega Ball was 7. The estimated jackpot was $893 million with a cash prize of $421.4 million. Price rises in the U.K. eased more than anticipated in February, raising expectations that the Bank of England may start cutting interest rates in the next few months. Seven people have been pronounced dead after a South Korean tanker ship capsized off an island in southwestern Japan, the coast guard said Wednesday afternoon, out of nine crew members found so far. Authorities confirmed that one member of the crew was alive, and described another’s condition as unknown. Earlier, authorities said all nine were in “unknown condition.” The coast guard is still searching for two more people who were on the chemical tanker, which flipped over after reporting trouble in a rough sea.

A Georgia man is scheduled to be put to death in what would be the state’s first execution in more than four years. Willie James Pye was convicted of killing his former girlfriend Alicia Lynn Yarbrough three decades ago.
