United Steelworkers union endorses Biden, giving him more labor support in presidential race

Times Union

The United Steelworkers Union has endorsed President Joe Biden, giving him support from another large labor union. The announcement Wednesday by the Pittsburgh-based union came less than a week after Biden voiced opposition to the planned sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel of Japan. The USW represents 850,000 workers in metals, mining, rubber and other industries. It said that Biden has a track record of supporting retirement security, affordable health care and laws that support workers. The union... Читать дальше...

Budget Office report credits immigration and spending deals with improved outlook despite huge debt

Times Union

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says it expects the federal government will be awash in debt over the next 30 years. But the office's outlook has improved over the past year due to increased immigration and agreements to reduce spending. The latest long-term budget and economic outlook from the office was released Wednesday. The office projects publicly held debt to reach 166% of gross domestic product in 2054. That’s down from the office’s June 2023 long-term budget projection that publicly... Читать дальше...

US retail sales to increase between 2.5% and 3.5% in 2024, trade group forecasts

Times Union

The largest U.S. retail trade group is forecasting that the country's retail sales will increase anywhere between 2.5% and 3.5% this year. That's a solid but still slower pace from the 3.6% seen last year. The National Retail Federation said Wednesday that sales should reach between $5.23 trillion and $5.28 trillion this year. The forecast is roughly in line with the 10-year pre-pandemic average annual sales growth of 3.6%. A strong jobs market and rising wages have fueled household spending, but... Читать дальше...

Texas wants to arrest immigrants in the country illegally. Why would that be such a major shift?

Times Union

The news in Texas over local immigration enforcement is so unusual because immigration laws are federal laws and enforcement of immigration law is the domain of federal law enforcement. Homeland Security agents and officers are responsible for arresting migrants who are caught crossing the U.S. border illegally, whether from Mexico or Canada. They’re also responsible for arresting and deporting people who are in the country illegally. But lawmakers in Texas passed a bill that would make illegally crossing the border a state crime... Times Union

A Washington state man accused of helping kill thousands of birds is expected to plead guilty to shooting eagles on an American Indian reservation in Montana and selling their feathers and body parts on the black market. Travis John Branson of Cusick, Washington, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy, wildlife trafficking and two counts of trafficking in federally protected bald and golden eagles on Wednesday. Feathers and other parts of eagles are illegal to sell but widely used by Native Americans in ceremonies and during powwows. Читать дальше...

Mike Bost survives GOP primary challenge from the right to win nomination for sixth term

Times Union

Southern Illinois congressman Mike Bost has won the Republican nomination for the state’s 12th Congressional District despite a challenge from the right in former state Sen. Darren Bailey. Bailey, the 2022 GOP nominee for Illinois governor, challenged the five-term incumbent, claiming he was not conservative enough for the district that encompasses virtually the entire bottom one-third of the state. He sought the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, but Trump chose Bost. Bailey attempted... Читать дальше...

Powell may provide hints of whether Federal Reserve is edging close to rate cuts

Times Union

The latest measures of U.S. inflation have turned out to be hotter than expected. As a result, a key question for Chair Jerome Powell and the 18 other officials on the Fed’s interest-rate-setting committee is how — or whether — those price figures have altered their timetable for cutting rates after having raised them 11 times beginning two years ago. Powell will surely be pressed on the topic at a news conference Wednesday after the Fed ends its latest two-day policy meeting. The central bank’s... Читать дальше...

2 years on, still no answer to why a China Eastern Boeing 737 crashed, killing all 132 people aboard

Times Union

Chinese accident investigators have indicated they have not yet determined the cause of a 2022 plane crash that killed all 132 people on board. An update issued Wednesday by the Civil Aviation Administration of China on the eve of the second anniversary of the crash shed little new light on it. The report largely reiterated earlier findings that everything appeared to have been normal with the plane and its crew, and that weather conditions were fine. The domestic China Eastern flight was flying... Читать дальше...

Historic covered bridges are under threat by truck drivers relying on GPS meant for cars

Times Union

One of Vermont’s historic covered bridges is under threat from modern technology. Box truck drivers relying on GPS designed for cars continually crash through Lyndon’s 140-year-old Miller’s Run bridge. That's despite signs, including a flashing one, to deter vehicles that are too tall or too heavy from crossing. Drivers can face fines of $5,000 from the town, plus state penalties. But the bridge keeps getting whacked. Lyndon is far from alone. According to head of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges... Читать дальше...

Stock market today: World shares are mixed as markets await a rate decision by the Fed

Times Union

Asian shares have closed mostly higher while European markets opened lower as investors awaited the latest signals from the Federal Reserve on the timing of cuts to interest rates. Oil prices and U.S. futures fell. Japan’s markets were closed for a holiday. The Japanese yen weakened further against the U.S. dollar, despite the Bank of Japan's decision a day earlier to lift its overnight call rate out of negative territory, though just barely. China left its benchmark lending rates unchanged, as expected. Читать дальше...

UK inflation falls by more than expected in February, triggering talk of lower interest rates

Times Union

Price rises in the U.K. eased more than anticipated in February, raising expectations that the Bank of England may start cutting interest rates in the next few months. The Office for National Statistics said Wednesday that inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, fell to 3.4%, its lowest level since September 2021, from 4% in January. The agency said easing food price increases were largely behind the fall. Analysts had expected a decline to 3.6%. On Thursday, the Bank of England is expected... Читать дальше...

Texas' migrant arrest law is back on hold after briefly taking effect

Times Union

A federal appeals court has again prevented Texas from arresting and deporting migrants accused of entering the U.S. illegally, hours after the the law briefly took effect. Before a divided U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday let the state law take effect while a legal challenge plays out, some sheriffs were ready to relish an unprecedented state expansion into border enforcement, while others were reluctant. Hours later, an order by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put the law again on hold.

Australia gets its most senior Chinese leadership visit since 2017 as relations thaw further

Times Union

Australia has received its most senior Chinese leadership visit in nearly seven years with stability a key theme of the discussions between the countries’ foreign ministers. China’s Wang Yi met with his counterpart Penny Wong on Wednesday on his tour of Australia and New Zealand. The meeting comes as relations continue to thaw after a tumultuous period under Australia’s former government in which trade measures were imposed on a raft of Australian products and security tensions were escalating around the region. Times Union

A Georgia man is scheduled to be put to death in what would be the state’s first execution in more than four years. Willie James Pye was convicted of killing his former girlfriend Alicia Lynn Yarbrough three decades ago. The planned lethal injection using the sedative pentobarbital is set to happen at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the state prison in Jackson. Pye, who’s 59, would be the first person executed in Georgia since January 2020.

GOP state attorneys push back on Biden's proposed diversity rules for apprenticeship programs

Times Union

Republican attorneys general in two dozen states are pushing back against a proposed Biden administration rule that seeks to expand diversity in apprenticeship programs. The proposed rule change would set new standards for registered apprenticeships that provide paid on-the-job training and education for skilled workers. The Republican attorneys general contend a requirement to recruit and hire people from “underserved communities” could amount to race-based discrimination. The proposal also would... Rural Nevada county roiled by voting conspiracies picks new top elections official

Times Union

A new clerk was chosen Tuesday to oversee elections in a deep-red rural Nevada county that has been roiled by false claims of widespread election fraud since 2020. Nye County Commissioners appointed Cori Freidhof to replace Mark Kampf when he steps down at the end of the month after less than two years at the helm. His brief tenure included a controversial hand-count of votes in the 2022 midterms. Kampf hand-picked Freidhof as his replacement.

Biden and Trump notch wins in Tuesday's primaries. Other races will offer hints on national politics

Times Union

Joe Biden and Donald Trump have won their parties' primaries in Kansas, notching more delegates as they continue their march to a rematch in November’s presidential election. Biden, a Democrat, and Trump, a Republican, also easily won primaries Tuesday in Ohio and Illinois. Trump also won Florida’s Republican primary. There was no contest for Biden to win in Florida as Democrats there canceled their primary and opted to award all 224 of their delegates to the incumbent. Voters in some states are echoing arguments offered by Biden and Trump. Читать дальше...

Times Union

Algerian officials are chiding television stations over the content choices they’ve made since the start of Ramadan. The North African nation's communications minister this week summoned television station directors to question them about their advertising and certain subject matter broadcasted. His criticisms were the latest to face Algerian television stations, which have recently shied away from airing views critical of the state and historically relied on it for advertising revenue. Communications... Читать дальше...
