Times Union

House Republicans are threatening to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress if he does not turn over unredacted materials related to the special counsel probe into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents. That is according to a letter obtained Monday by The Associated Press. Reps. James Comer and Jim Jordan demanded in the letter that Garland comply with the subpoena the two chairmen sent last month as part of their investigation into Special Counsel Robert Hur’s decision not to charge the president. Times Union

A union representing many of Germany's train drivers says it and the country's main railway operator have reached a deal in a long dispute over working hours and pay that was marked by a string of strikes. Neither the GDL union nor state-owned railway operator Deutsche Bahn gave details of their agreement on Monday. Both scheduled separate statements on Tuesday. GDL called drivers for Deutsche Bahn out on strike repeatedly in the dispute that has dragged on for months. It was the most consistently... Читать дальше...

Kushner earlier this month confirmed reports that his company plans to finance the project in central Belgrade. It would feature a high-rise hotel, a luxury apartment complex, office spaces and shops. The petition... Читать дальше...

Judge dismisses lawsuit by Musk's X against nonprofit researchers tracking hate speech on platform

Times Union

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s X Corp. against the non-profit Center for Countering Digital Hate, which has documented the increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased by the Tesla owner. UN demands cease-fire in Gaza during Muslim holy month of Ramadan, its 1st demand to halt fighting

Times Union

The United Nations Security Council has demanded a cease-fire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, its first demand to halt fighting. The United States abstained on the resolution, which also demanded the release of all hostages taken captive during Hamas’ Oct. 7 surprise attack in southern Israel. But the measure does not link that demand to the cease-fire during Ramadan, which ends April 9. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately canceled a planned visit to Washington... Times Union

A New York appeals court has agreed to hold off collection of former President Donald Trump’s $454 million civil fraud judgment — if he puts up $175 million within 10 days. If Trump does, it will stop the clock on collection and prevent the state from seizing his assets while he appeals. The development came Monday just before New York Attorney General Letitia James was expected to initiate efforts to collect the judgment. Trump’s lawyers had pleaded for a state appeals court to halt collection,... Читать дальше...

The watchdog has said that much of the information was already in the public domain... Читать дальше...

Energy agency announces $6 billion to slash emissions in industrial facilities

Times Union

The industrial sector is getting $6 billion in federal funding for projects that will slash planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, the largest-ever U.S. investment to decarbonize domestic industries. The Biden administration announced the funding Monday, which is through the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. One-third of all energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. come from the industrial sector, which has been difficult to decarbonize. Iron, steel, aluminum... Читать дальше...

Supreme Court again confronts the issue of abortion, this time over access to widely used medication

Times Union

The Supreme Court is considering a new abortion case affecting women across the U.S. Abortion opponents want the high court in arguments Tuesday to ratify a ruling from a conservative federal appeals court that would limit access to a medication called mifepristone, which was used in nearly two-thirds of abortions last year. The case comes two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, enabling bans or severe restrictions on abortion in many Republican-led states. A decision should come by late June. The two leaders on Monday are expected to discuss the Biden administration’s use of offices that were set up in Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador in the fall. Big brands could pivot easily if TikTok goes away. For many small businesses, it's another story

Times Union

A lot of “What ifs” still surround a bill the U.S. House passed last week that would mandate TikTok′s Beijing-based parent company to sell its stake in the platform or face a nationwide ban. Big brands that have relied on TikTok videos to reach younger consumers do not appear to be panicking as they wait to see what happens. But they have started planning. Some are retooling promotional campaigns originally intended just for TikTok. To mitigate any risks, many companies are researching alternatives... Читать дальше...

TikTok bill faces uncertain fate in the Senate as legislation to regulate tech industry has stalled

Times Union

TikTok’s extensive lobbying campaign is the latest tech industry push since the House passed legislation that would ban the popular app if its China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake. Tech industry lobbying has paid off many times over as Congress has so far failed to act on bills that would protect users’ privacy, protect children from online threats, make companies more liable for their content and put loose guardrails around artificial intelligence, among other things. Some see the TikTok bill... Читать дальше...

Trump is due in court for a hearing in his hush money case after new evidence delayed his trial

Times Union

Donald Trump’s hush money case in New York is set for a crucial hearing this week. A judge will weigh on Monday when the former president will go on trial. Trump has pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records, but prosecutors say Trump did it as part of an effort to protect his 2016 campaign by burying stories of an extramarital affair. Jury selection was set to start Monday but was postponed after the recent delivery of thousands of pages of records from a previous investigation. Trump’s... Читать дальше...

As Biden tours the country and visits swing states, Trump is fundraising and playing golf

Times Union

As President Joe Biden campaigns for reelection at a furious pace, his 2024 rival, Donald Trump, is behind closed doors. Trump has held just a single campaign event since he locked up the Republican presidential nomination on March 12. Biden, meanwhile, has been barnstorming the country. After Tuesday, he will have touched down in all of the 2024 swing states in the less than three weeks since his State of the Union address. The differing approaches underscore the deficits each side must overcome. Читать дальше...

'Winners and losers': The world of coffee is being reordered by EU laws to stop cutting of forests

Times Union

New European Union rules aimed at protecting dwindling forests are reordering how the world gets its coffee. Experts say the rules requiring companies to provide more detailed evidence that the coffee they sell is not linked to deforestation will create new winners and losers. That might help curb the logging that is the second-biggest source of carbon emissions. But it also may exclude small farmers — roughly 6 million worldwide — who might not be able to provide the potentially expensive data. Some countries... Читать дальше...

Chick-Fil-A backtracks from its no-antibiotics-in-chicken pledge, blames projected supply shortages

Times Union

The fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A backtracked from its decade-old “no antibiotics ever” pledge intended to help prevent human antibiotic resistance linked to the rampant use of the drugs in livestock production. Instead, the company said, it will embrace a standard known as “no antibiotics important to human medicine,” which entails avoidance of such medicines commonly used to treat people and limits the use of animal antibiotics to cases of animal illness. Livestock producers have long used antibiotics... Читать дальше...

NBC's Chuck Todd lays into his network for hiring former RNC chief Ronna McDaniel as an analyst

Times Union

Former “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd says that some NBC News journalists are uncomfortable that the network had hired former Republican National Committee head Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor. What was unusual was Todd's outlet for the criticism — on the NBC show he used to run. Appearing Sunday as a panelist, Todd said NBC bosses owed his successor, Kristen Welker, an apology, for putting her in the uncomfortable position of interviewing McDaniel on the show. News outlets hiring politicians as analysts is hardly unusual. Читать дальше...
